On Saturday, May 17th, we gathered at the Iwo Jima Memorial at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts, to honor and remember all those who fought, and especially those who gave their lives, during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
It was a moving ceremony, with members of the LCPL John J Van Gyzen Det. 1285 Marine Corps League in attendance. We were especially honored by the presence of Gold Star Mother Jane Leckstrom Van Gyzen Van and Iwo Jima survivor Walter Mark, whose courage and humility are inspiring as are my fellow Marine veterans I’ve gotten to know over the last ten yearsrs
Being part of this event was a powerful reminder that the sacrifices made at Iwo Jima must never be forgotten. I’m deeply grateful to the brave service members, who answered the call to serve with such courage and commitment. Members of the league continue to live our lives in a way we hope honors our fallen soldiers memories with the same spirit of dedication and purpose.
Thank you Kerrie Ann for singing the National Anthem.
